17-4 PH Stainless Steel vs. 304 Stainless Steel: What Are the Differences?
17-4 PH Stainless Steel and 304 Stainless Steel are both widely used stainless steel materials in industrial equipment. However, these two materials are designed for somewhat different applications: 304 is known for its corrosion resistance, ease of fabrication, and cost-effectiveness, while 17-4 PH is engineered to achieve high mechanical strength and hardness through precipitation hardening.
What Is 17-4 PH Stainless Steel?
17-4 PH is a precipitation-hardening stainless steel, in which “17-4” generally refers to a composition containing approximately 17% Chromium and 4% Nickel. The designation PH – Precipitation Hardening represents the key characteristic of this stainless steel: heat treatment can be used to increase its hardness and mechanical strength.
Thanks to these properties, 17-4 PH is commonly selected for components that need to withstand loads, mechanical forces, or relatively demanding operating conditions. This material also offers good corrosion resistance while maintaining high mechanical properties after appropriate heat treatment.
One important point when reviewing a datasheet is that 17-4 PH is available in different heat treatment conditions, such as H900, H1025, and H1150. Therefore, two products made from the same 17-4 PH material but treated under different heat treatment conditions may have different hardness and mechanical strength.

What Makes 304 Stainless Steel Special?
304 Stainless Steel, commonly known as 304 stainless steel, is one of the most widely used stainless steel materials today. Its composition contains Chromium and Nickel at levels that provide good corrosion resistance in many common operating environments.
One of the major advantages of 304 stainless steel is its balance of corrosion resistance, machinability, weldability, and cost. For this reason, 304 stainless steel is widely used in tanks, piping systems, food processing equipment, industrial machinery, and stainless steel structures.
However, when the primary requirement is high mechanical strength and load-bearing capacity, 304 does not offer the same advantages as precipitation-hardened 17-4 PH stainless steel.
Comparison of 17-4 PH and 304 Stainless Steel
| Criteria | 17-4 PH Stainless Steel | 304 Stainless Steel |
|---|---|---|
| Material type | Precipitation-hardening stainless steel | Austenitic stainless steel |

| Mechanical strength | High | Lower than 17-4 PH |
| Hardness | Can reach high levels depending on the heat treatment condition | Relatively low |
| Corrosion resistance | Good | Good to very good in many common environments |
| Machining and welding | More complex | Generally easier to machine and weld |
| Material cost | Generally higher | Generally more affordable |
| Typical applications | Load-bearing components, load cells, shafts, valves, and industrial equipment | Food processing equipment, tanks, machinery, and stainless steel structures |
Why Is 17-4 PH Commonly Used for Load Cells?
For a load cell, the material used to manufacture the sensor body needs to provide more than just corrosion resistance. The load cell body must withstand mechanical loads and produce very small, stable deformations, allowing the strain gauge system to convert these changes into accurate electrical signals.
This is why 17-4 PH can be an attractive option for load cell designs that require high mechanical strength, good load-bearing capability, and long-term stability.
In particular, for industrial load cells, using a material with high mechanical properties allows manufacturers to design the sensor body to meet specific load capacity and dimensional requirements. However, material selection alone should not be used to evaluate the quality of a load cell.
Load cell accuracy also depends on multiple factors, including mechanical design, strain gauge type, heat treatment, temperature compensation, sealing, moisture resistance, and the calibration process.
Does 17-4 PH Have Better Corrosion Resistance Than 304?
This is an area that can easily lead to misunderstandings. It is not appropriate to simply conclude that 17-4 PH has better corrosion resistance than 304 just because 17-4 PH offers higher mechanical strength.
In many common operating environments, 304 stainless steel provides very good corrosion resistance and is a popular choice because of its balance between performance and cost. 17-4 PH also offers good corrosion resistance, but its main advantage lies in its mechanical strength and ability to be precipitation-hardened through heat treatment.
In environments involving water, salt, chemicals, or stringent hygiene requirements, the environmental conditions, product design, and surface protection methods should all be considered rather than relying solely on the material designation.
Should You Choose 17-4 PH or 304 Stainless Steel?
If your priority is high mechanical strength, load-bearing capability, and hardness, 17-4 PH is often more suitable, particularly for mechanical components or load cells operating under high loads.
If your requirements focus on good corrosion resistance, ease of machining, weldability, and cost-effectiveness, 304 Stainless Steel remains a highly practical choice.
To put it simply: 304 is a material focused on balance and practicality, while 17-4 PH is focused on mechanical strength. For industrial weighing equipment, material selection should be based on load capacity, operating environment, accuracy requirements, and the expected service life of the equipment.

17-4 PH Stainless Steel in Industrial Weighing Equipment
In the field of electronic weighing, material specifications are often included in the datasheets of load cells, load pins, weighing modules, and force sensors. When a manufacturer specifies that a sensor body is made of 17-4 PH Stainless Steel, this provides valuable information about the product’s load-bearing capability and mechanical properties.
However, to select the right load cell for a weighing system, several specifications must be considered together, including capacity, accuracy class, excitation voltage, output sensitivity, temperature compensation, ingress protection, and sensor body material. A load cell made from a high-performance material may still be unsuitable for an application if its load capacity or environmental resistance does not meet the actual operating requirements.
Golden Lotus Company provides consulting and solutions for electronic weighing scales, load cells, and industrial measuring equipment, supporting customers in selecting configurations based on actual load capacities and operating conditions. >>> See more: 304 Stainless Steel Load Cells
