[1] IP - Ingress Protection rating is used to specify the environmental protection - electrical enclosure - of electrical equipment

 

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings are developed by the European Committee for Electro Technical Standardization (CENELEC) (NEMA IEC 60529 Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures - IP Code), specifying the environmental protection the enclosure provides.

The IP rating normally has two (or three) numbers:

  1. Protection f-rom solid objects or materials
  2. Protection f-rom liquids (water)
  3. Protection against mechanical impacts (commonly omitted, the third number is not a part of IEC 60529)

Example - IP Rating

With the IP rating IP 54, 5 describes the level of protection f-rom solid objects and 4 describes the level of protection f-rom liquids.

An "X" can used for one of the digits if there is only one class of protection, i.e. IPX1 which addresses protection against vertically falling d-rops of water e.g. condensation..

IP Second number - Protection against liquids

In order to comply with the stringent requirements for CE Marking machine makers today fits their machines with parts certified according EU (European Uni-on) and international standards.

 

IP69K

German standard DIN 40050-9 extends the IEC 60529 rating system described above with an IP69K rating for high-pressure, high-temperature wash-down applications.[5]Such enclosures must not only be dust tight (IP6X), but also able to withstand high-pressure and steam cleaning.

The test specifies a spray nozzle that is fed with 80°C water at 8–10MPa(80–100bar) and a flow rate of 14–16L/min. The nozzle is held 10–5 cm f-rom the tested device at angles of 0°, 40°, 60° and 90° for 30s each. The test device sits on a turntable that rotates once every 12s (5rpm).

The IP69K test specification was initially developed for road vehicles, especially those that need regular intensive cleaning (dump trucks, cement mixers, etc.), but also finds use in other areas (e.g., food industry, car wash centres).

The United States National Electrical Manufacturers Association(NEMA) also publishes protection ratings for enclosures similar to the IP rating system published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). However, it also dictates other product features not addressed by IP codes, such as corrosionresistance, gasketaging, and construction practices. Thus, while it is possible to map IP Codes to NEMA ratingsthat satisfy or exceed the IP Code criteria, it is not possible to map NEMA ratings to IP codes, as the IP Code does not mandate the additional requirements. The table above indicates the minimum NEMA rating that satisfies a given IP code, but can only be used in that way, not to map IP to NEMA.[6]

North American enclosure rating systems are defined in NEMA250, UL50, UL 508, and CSAC22.2 N°. 94.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA for short) developed a range of standards for electrical and electronic equipment enclosures. Below is a list of the partial standards our LCD enclosures adhere to.

NEMA 4.
The Type 4 enclosures are predominantly intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against wind borne dust and rain, splashing water and hose-directed water and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure. They are not intended to provide protection against conditions such as internal condensation or internal icing.

NEMA 4X.
The Type 4X enclosures are intended for indoor and outdoor use. Providing a degree of protection against corrosion, wind borne dust and rain, splashing water, and hose-directed water; and to be undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure. they are not intended to provide protection against conditions such as internal condensation or internal icing.

NEMA 12.
The Type 12 enclosures are intended for indoor use only, primarily to provide a degree of protection against circulating dust, falling dirt, and dripping none corrosive liquids. They are not intended to provide protection against such conditions as internal condensation.

NEMA 13.
The Type 13 enclosures are intended for indoor use only, primarily to provide a degree of protection against lint, dust, spraying of water, oil and none corrosive coolant. They are not intended to provide protection against conditions such as internal condensation.
